One is the rumor going around town about Wolf maybe being canned by the town council. Uh oh!The other thread is a complicated murder mystery. Former Sheriff Hal Burton needs help. His wife has left him and his only nephew is wanted for murder, while he lays in a drunken stupor. Wolf decides to help and manages to get an okay from the sheriff of the town where the murders have happened. This authorâ€™s charac terizations are so well done, youâ€™ll feel like you know these people. The story is fast moving and the surprises and twists are well done. An entertaining read and series! Being away from my word processor after Iâ€™ve finished a book has its plus and its minus.The plus is that it gives me an opportunity to reflect on what I want to say in my review. The minus is that some of my best thoughts are sometimes lost before I can memorialize them in my review.â€œDivided Skyâ€ by Jeff Carson is the thirteenth book in his David Wolf series. It is also my thirteenth book in the series all of which I have read and reported on.I do not consider it insignificant to say that Jeff Carson and I have had an ongoing conversation, largely about this series, for some time. I have told him that he is to the â€œDavid Wolfâ€ series as Michael Connelly is to the â€œHarry Boschâ€ series. Out of a sense of modesty, he will choose to deny that acclaim about his writing as accurate,...but itâ€™s my opinion, and Iâ€™m sticking with it. Reading â€œDivided Skyâ€ was, to me, like that of getting a letter from home I used to get when I was stationed overseas while in the service. It felt that good.I donâ€™t retell story lines in my reviews, so no ***Spoiler Alerts*** here, but suffice it to say, the essence of a good murder mystery is one in which the author is able to hide the ball, so to speak, until the point when the punch line of the â€œwho dunnitâ€ has been reached, but not any earlier. Jeff Carson knows that and is good at it. Simply put, I find a read boring if Iâ€™ve figured out who did the deed too early on. Not so in this case.I analyze a book on Plot, Character Development, Rising Action, Falling Action, anti climax, and Resolution. I leave summarizing the read to others than the author who does it best anyway.As a minor departure in that vein though, I have to comment on something. This read was, in part, a National Geographic study of the locale, Rocky Points, CO, which the writer depicts in some detail. Such gives the reader an appreciation of the geography of the setting making it one we might like to visit. An interesting aside, I thought. Now, as to Plot, it was what I call linear. No disruptions to entice either speed reading out of boredom, or putting the book down only to come back to it later and not know where Iâ€™d left off. The story line stayed with me. I was able to maintain my interest in the story from its beginning to its end. Frankly, it was a hard book to put down. But I do that from time to time to challenge my ability to recall where I left off. A good plot is one I can recall without any re reading. This book had a tight plot.Character Development of both Protagonists and Antagonists (and there were both) was well done. I like my protagonists to be â€œgoodâ€ and I like my antagonists to be better...as in â€œbadâ€.Rising Action was a builder throughout the CSI portion, throughout the interrogation and on through the investigation combined with the struggling relationship between Sheriff Roll and Chief Detective Wolf. Falling Action then took over where it slammed into the anti climax and then on int o the Resolution.Resolutions, for me, can be troublesome in that they can come across as maudlin. Ordinarily, I might consider that to be the case with this read, except, we are given a hint that this story may not be the end of the series. Needless to say, but I hope that is the case.Iâ€™ll leave my analysis at that and wait to see what comes.
